Abstract
The recurring use of Western standard texts in an English Literature class for decades needs to be dismissed nowadays as the global citizens have become more multilingual and multicultural. When compared to, for example, the British/American Literary Canon, literatures from the neighboring Asian countries can better help us in validating our shared cultural experiences and historical realities as members of the postcolonial society. This paper is to argue that critical and creative use or inclusion of Southeast Asian literary works in teaching literature is not only contextually relevant in Indonesia, but it also resourcefully promotes humanistic values we seek to find in literary studies. Suggested herein is the use of reflective teaching pedagogy. The interplay of methods, contents, context, critical thinking, and evaluation is important, if studying literature means to see new worlds in new ways rather than to gain merely cognitive skills of reading a literary text.
